Not for the faint of heart. - Attempted IDs
Update 4/21/15:
-----Thanks to the many individuals at BugGuide.net for their ID's, corrections, and other help - some folks give suggestions, some move pictures, and so on. Of course, if it weren't for the people that took the time to post their pictures in the first place I wouldn't be able to look around for my own ID's, so there's that, too! Underneath my copies here, of the pictures that BG keeps, I copy the link back to BG. Also, if a picture gets frassed but an ID is given, I credit the IDer. It's easier though for me to copy a link - there are just too many helpful people and that's my small way of saying "Thanks!" to them for their expertise and time - in whatever fashion it's given.
-----Moths: Thanks to BG, MPG, MPG's walk-through-moths pages, and Bob Patterson's Maryland moth collection. In the beginning I used BG exclusively. Eventually I found mothphotographersgroup, and quite some time later I found Bob Patterson's MD moths. His collection helped from time to time because once in a while I'd find a match without having to try to narrow to even "Superfamily". It's been about four years and now I'm at the point where I'll take a stab at Superfamilies like Pyralid, Geometer, or Noctuid. (Kind of makes me wonder if I'll ever learn Family names.) Google can be a quick reference if I remember a moth's name and want a fast yes/no. I also use Google to find moths and get leads on family or genus. If I get lucky, I take a link from Google back to BG. After several years of hard work, I'm not much smarter than I was before, but a little tidbit of info. sticks with me from time to time and, considering where I started, searching for a new moth (although it can still be time-consuming) isn't as painful as it used to be - for the most part. :o)
