KAREN'S GALLERY (est. 2005)

An example of the varied life in my mini-marsh, an adult male Widow Skimmer.

As small as it is, the marsh is teeming with life. In addition to dragonflies there is the usual assortment of nature both winged and not, and then there are the myriad of grasses, sedges, and reeds that I look forward to learning more about. I already found an uncommon wildflower that can only be found in marshes and that makes me even more curious about what else I might find here.

Karen also ID'd a white flower that is growing at the edge of the wetness and grows up the slope into the lawn. I pointed it out and Karen said "Bluet". I wasn't sure (because I expected a Bluet to be blue, sigh), but it turns out her first instincts were right. After some research I learned it's a Long-leaved Bluet (Houstonia longifolia). Some time in the near future I'll be posting the picture and those of you that subscribe to the Nature album's RSS feed will get to see what it looks like.
