Flats of garden start-ups with human seedlings

Flats of garden start-ups with human seedlings Starting seedlings was problematic for me. There were just too many. Looked around for growing trays and the one that would handle my needs cost $300 or $500, and that was back in the 80's. I showed your father the picture and asked him if he couldn't make one.

I guess he was tired of seeing trays all around the house as I was, so he built this for me out of wood. He painted it with water-proof paint and it did a great job. Instead of water trays individually (and finding drip trays for all of them), I could just mix gallons of fertilizer water and pour it into the holding trays. Problem solved. Mom happy! Later on all the seedlings would need to be transplanted into bigger pots, but -- that's another story.

My memory is of using the rack in the basement for years, so I suspect it didn't last long upstairs. Kevin thought it would be fun to stick an apple peel or something in his mouth for the pic. eek :o)
