1958 - On the stoop with next-door neighbor, Winnie. Ran out of Jacks and using pebbles. (see description) Had to laugh when I saw this. I was a barefoot baby even in the city and the reason I'm smiling is because half a century later I'm sitting here, still barefoot. It was ungodly hot in the city. I hated the nights. The sun baked the bricks all day so it didn't cool off. The next house was maybe 5 or 6 feet away so there was no breeze. I'd lie awake at night till midnight or later, trying to keep still, and wishing I would die. I could feel the sweat crawl down my scalp and on my neck. I wondered what kind of terrible place my parents brought me to. But, then, things always looked better in the morning, especially when they turned the fire hydrants on.
