Millepede - (Apheloria virginiensis)
Millipedes, like this one, with bright color patterns, secrete a compound containing cyanide. Wash your hands after handling them and do not allow children to pick them up. (Oops!) The cyanide-producing millipede alone eats 33% to 50% of all the dead coniferous and deciduous leaves that come to rest on the forest floor. It is one of the most critical links in the entire soil foodweb.
