2011-5-28 Bombay Hook
Three birders went to Bombay Hook without hats and without insect repellant. Except for a short run around the boardwalk trail most of the birding was done safely from inside an air-conditioned car. We didn't do too badly and managed about 45 species.

There's an Egret rookery up ahead and the picture is through the windshield.

Northern Diamondback Terrapin(Malaclemys t. terrapin)

We saw four individuals today. The males are much smaller and show brighter colors.

After moving one out of the road, we saw another ahead that appeared to be digging a hole in the middle of the road.

This individual was about 8" long (just the carapace) and about 6-7" wide.

Before we could get to the next one, someone else got out of their car and moved the turtle off to the side.

The plastron doesn't have any notable markings and isn't hinged like a Box Turtle's.

Photo-op over, Terry gets moved to the side of the road where the salt marsh is.

Quite a few Black-necked Stilts around.

A Great Blue Heron on the left and on the right it's probably just a Willet, no matter how hard I try to make it something else.

Saw several pairs of Stilts nesting and guarding nests.

We believe that the duck on the left could be a hybrid Mallard. Too bad the pictures don't show well what we saw.

Eastern Kingbird - Mom said, "immature Tree Swallow" and grabbed the camera.

Eastern Kingbird - Michael and Karen said they saw a white terminal band on the tail when it flew off.

Wild Turkey - Michael has excellent eyes. As we leave the Refuge he spots movement in the grass off to the side.

Bombay Hook lists Wild Turkey as uncommon, so we're fortunate to have been able to see these here.
