do not confuse with:
White or Pink: Nelumbo nucifera - upward-cupped, rounded, waxy leaves, up to 2 feet across; flowers bloom for 3 days, all day, close at night; this is the flower whose rounded seed pods (with holes) are used in dried flower arrangements

Blue: Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea)
-another Lotus is native to North America and is known as American Lotus and Yellow Lotus (Nelumbo lutea).
Very pale yellow (looks mostly white against dark green of leaves), formerly known as Nelumbium luteum, Nelumbo pentapetala (and other names) which is not to be confused with above American White Water Lily (Nymphaea odorata) native:
