Coastal Redwood or Giant Sequoia (Sequoia sempervirens) 4/2011 CA (see description) Burls are made up of 1000's of bud cells. Most remain dormant as long as the parent tree is healthy. Each bud can clone a tree that is genetically identical to its parent. A dead redwood log lying on the forest floor can sprout long after the parent has died.
