Eastern Mosquito-fern (Azolla caroliniana) 2015-12-31 Bombay Hook NWR, DE

native
aka Duckweed Fern, Fairy Moss, Water Fern
This aquatic fern floats on water, is one of seven species of Azolla the world over in the family Salviniaceae, and doesn't look like the ferns we're used to seeing. Its "fronds" grow to about 5-10mm long, and it turns red in Winter or strong sunlight. The undersides of these fronds are a very pale green. A. caroliniana prefers slow water and is more likely to be found at the edge of a pond than a raging river.
