Common Whitetail (Plathemis lydia) imm. male 2016-8-10 Newark, DE

Last month's picture of an immature male Common Whitetail showed it with a brown abdomen. This young male is beginning to put on a pale dusty coating (pruinescence) that will soon obscure the marks on its side and will earn it the "whitetail" part of its name. Also, the white patches on the hind wing, close to the body, are more visible at this stage.
