Case-bearing Leaf Beetle (Cryptocephalinae) 7-8 x 4mm - 2016-7-25 Newark, DE
This morning I found that Blaine Mathison at bg ID'd this as a "cryptocephaline beetle larva".

(I moved the pictures to frass, not sure if I should have done that or not.)
Anyway, this is another example of reason over instinct - the thing gave me the heebie-jeebies because I never saw it move and didn't know what it was, or what it contained, but the moment I knew what it was (of course I looked it up, sheesh) I felt better about it.
Not sure if the leaf was getting old, I went out and after finding the branch it originally was on, I moved the leaflet on to a new one and attached it with packing tape - as you see above.
