Floating Pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) 2015-12-31 Bombay Hook NWR, DE

aka Floating Pennyroyal, Floating Marsh Pennywort
native
When blooming this gives tiny white flowers. The leaves are deceptive. It appears as though the stem joins the middle of the leaf, instead there is a long cleft in the leaf and the stem is actually on the side - the leaf curls around it. It likes shallow water.

A similar plant, American Water Pennywort (H. americana), has branched stems and won't usually be found in water. The lobes on the leaves aren't as noticeable (more shallow), and the stem lays on the ground, roots, and may make colonies.
