Cortinarius - Hawk Mountain, PA, Mushroom walk with Lee Schisler, Jr. (Sep 9, 2006)

The gills are forked towards the margin and the stem is scaled. Cortinarius has a membrane covering the gills when young. As it matures, the filaments often collapse against the stem leaving a ring. In other species of Cortinarius it sometimes looks like it's wearing a tight sock. Some have a wet/slimy cap. As the mushroom ages it becomes more brownish/rusty.
