6/3/2010 - Plains Coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria) (See description) AKA Calliopsis, Golden Tickweed, Painted Daisy. Early settlers placed this plant in their mattresses to repel fleas and bedbugs. This plant is called an annual because it germinates in late Summer. It then grows to a small clump of leaves and overwinters. I'd call it an annual, biennial, and a perennial. Sheesh. It can grow as tall as four feet. Flowerheads are 1" to 2" across, are yellow, and have a reddish-brown center.

This one had me fooled. Going by the growth (speed and height) and the foliage, I thought it was another plant. The dark center surprised me, so after some research I found out it's another plant entirely.
