KAREN'S GALLERY (est. 2005)

Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, and statue of Barbaro. Barbaro is the one with a jockey on his back.

Churchill Downs is a thoroughbred racetrack and hosts the Kentucky Derby annually. It officially opened in 1875, and held the first Kentucky Derby and the first Kentucky Oaks in the same year.

Barbaro (April 29, 2003 – January 29, 2007) was an American thoroughbred that won the 2006 Kentucky Derby. He was the sixth undefeated horse to win the Kentucky Derby. Barbaro had not competed for 5 weeks prior to the race, which was the longest layoff in 50 years for a Derby winner. He shattered his leg two weeks later in the 2006 Preakness Stakes and that eventually lead to his death.

Barbaro was cremated and his remains placed under the statue. The statue was purposely placed outside the gate so that fans wouldn't have to pay admission to see him.
