The Goths were a Germanic tribe that died out in the middle ages. (see description) The Goths might not have survived, but the name "Pankraz" did. The Goths were divided into two major groups, the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. Our Pankraz stems from the area of the Ostrogoths (Eastern Goths). In the 1600's all that was left of the Goths was what some believed to be a remnant of the language found in a dialect in the Crimea (Ukraine).

To help you remember Ostrogoth, try this. In German East is "Ost". "Österreich" means Eastern Kingdom but we know it as Austria here in the U.S. and, surprise!, Austria is east of Germany. (vbg)
