KAREN'S GALLERY (est. 2005)

1963 Germantown back yard - We liked to listen to the transistor radio on the blanket. This is the girl of the "cherry-picking" episode and this is about the age we were when it happened.

The neighbors to the back, on the left of us, had a black (Bing) cherry tree growing next to our fence. We watched the cherries get riper and riper. We made our plan. One night we got a ladder and a small bucket and by moonlight we picked the cherries from the neighbor's tree. While we were at it we filled our bellies. We went back to the kitchen and decided to pit the cherries in the bucket and divide them equally between us. We began and I saw something odd. I took a closer look and saw a hole in the cherry. I pulled the cherry apart and it contained a worm. Charlotte turned pale and gagged. She managed to keep everything down, though. I didn't want to think about it, so I concentrated on checking the cherries. Almost every one had a hole in it. (sigh) The neighbor had apple trees too. We never had the nerve to go after those.
