August Meyer Born: 1909 Died: 1936 Glashütten, Germany (Birth and Death years for August Meyer from Erika Neuner, Glashütten, Germany.) As I recall being told, he was a sickly child and died a young man from some common disease of those days. -K)

Out-of wedlock children by Hans:
(Although there is some truth to illegitimate children there is no way to know with any certainty the status of all names below, and I would urge caution, please.)

(Johann was a known womanizer. His wife left him for that and also money reasons while pregnant with Konrad, and is the reason that Konrad was born in Creez and not in Glashütten. She stayed there, with her sister, until after Konrad was born. How long she stayed after that, I don't remember. -K)

(My memory is of my mother, Margarete BÄRNREUTHER Meyer telling me of one certain and possibly a second woman as illegitimate children of Hans. I don't recall their names. -K)

This is the list, from Erika Neuner, of 3 illegitimate children by Johann (Hans).

Erika says three out of wedlock:
1) A son, Hans Meyer, with Margarete Seyfferth the niece of his wife:
2) Hans Seyfferth was a "Marienesoldat" and died in World War II.
(I tried to find out what a Marienesoldat is and the closest I can come
is that perhaps it's a misspelling of "Marinesoldat", or Marine Soldier,
what we would call a Marine or a Sailor. Any ideas?)
3) Margarete Seyfferth (nickname Reta and married Karl Schmidt)
Born Jan. 1919. Date of death, unknown
Children of Reta Seyfferth: Helmut, Hertha, Gisela

He had a glass eye, right? Oh, you gotta include that interesting tidbit of a story...

You just did! I didn't know that! Or maybe I forgot. (sigh) I was wondering why he had his eyes closed in the picture . . .

Trust me, the tradition of sleeping in chairs lives on!

Nobody, but nobody, I think, can top Aunt Gretel. In Wildwood she was famous for falling asleep mid-sentence. (!) I'm glad that (so far) that particular gene seems to have passed me by. :o)

    @ DEB

I spoke with Walter a few days ago. He tells me the man was blind in one eye and, yes, he had a glass eye. He says the part about the bull gouging the eye could be true, it sounds vaguely familiar to him. He also said that it wasn't Johann B. (your great-grandfather) that was famous for falling asleep anywhere, it was your grandfather Konrad. There are many stories of Opa Meyer falling asleep anywhere, most famously with burning cigarettes. Walter said he never heard any stories about Johann B. falling asleep easily.

Here is info I obtained from lineage written in Oma Gretel's hand. Let me know if there are contradictions.
    Johann Meyer died 11/19/1930
Johann (Uncle John) Meyer died 1/16/1978
August born 4/16/1909, died when he was around 30

@ Deb - Thanks. I've added the date Uncle John died. That sounds about right. I had down late 70's early 80's. He was buried just after a blizzard. Narrow Philly streets, cars on both sides and plowed in with snow. That was an unusual day.

@ Deb - I'm going to hold off changing the date of death for Johann Meyer the elder... I also have a list of dates written in my mother's hand. I'm not saying your wrong. Am just wanting to wait to see a copy of what you have and compare it to what I have. I can't even check what I have until I find it again. So, for now will leave the date as is. It's entirely within the realm of possibility that I made another mistake. (gasp) :D

@ Deb - I decided the best course of action was to at least also enter the date you have so as to draw people's attention to the discrepancy, until it's settled.

@ Deb - In addition to Aunt Gretel's and Aunt Elizabeth's, Walter and Betty have Uncle John's death certificate, too. They've already said they would let me know when they find it, so it's just a matter of time until they run across it.

@ Deb - I removed the notation under his date of death that you have different information (your disagreement is still here in the comments). I've scanned the picture front and back and I can say with great certainty that this is my mother's handwriting. :o) If there's even the slightest doubt, I have letters from her. Please take a look at the next picture I put up a minute ago. It clearly states that Johann Meyer died Sep. 23, 1930. Feedback welcome.

@ Deb - Is it possible for you to take a picture of the part where my mother writes that Johann Meyer died on 11/9/1930 and send it to me so that I can post it also? If you have that in my mother's handwriting, then we have a *real* discrepancy. If so, it will be challenging and fun to figure it out! :o)
