Arrival - New York Harbor - In early morning light, my mother's and my first look at the Statue of Liberty. (see description) Opa Meyer was in the States in the late 1920's till early 1930's before going back to take care of the farm and marrying Oma, so he'd seen the Statue of Liberty before.
Going through customs was interesting. Oma had brought some kind of wurst and laid it on her bosom to sneak it through. We were anxious to get through because we knew that Brigitte was waiting for us somewhere behind the ropes.
While everyone else was busy with the customs agent, I scanned the crowd. Finally I saw her, and with a loud shout, "BRIGITTE!!" I ran over to her. I didn't occur to me until just a year or two ago that I never got in trouble for crossing the ropes. I was beside myself to be with my sister again, and she wore a grin from ear to ear, too. Come to think of it, there probably weren't any ropes because I don't think I would have crossed them had they been there. Then again, who knows.
