1959 - AT&T - Sieglind's first job

It was a 5-day, daily train trip to 195 Broadway (New York City) for 5 years. Worked on the 5th floor as a clerk (Public Relations Dept.) and for a while on the 23rd floor (Personnel Dept.)

I will tell a little about how I got the job. After coming home from
Germany in Dec. it was time to look for work. I would have liked to
go to King's College in Briarcliff Manor NY and perhaps become a
teacher (Kindergarten, Physical Ed or German). I needed money which I
did not have. Papa's comments about this was "I will not give you
any money for school. Women should stay at home." I do not want to
put all the blame on Papa because if I really wanted to badly enough
I could have figured a way to borrow the money. Back then 500 dollars
was a lot.

A friend of mine told me that IBM was hiring and I asked her to get
me directions.

(Before this I was praying that the Lord would help me as I ventured
out to the unknown. I was almost 18 and a little frightened of the
big city and shy).

I followed her directions and took the train to Fulton St. I got off,
walked up the stairs and crossed the street and went into an
impressive looking building. I asked the lady at the information
booth if this was IBM and she said "No, AT&T. Are you looking for
work?" I said I was and she directed me to the room where they were
interviewing. I went in, was interviewed and given the job.

The Spirit of Electricity was atop the building. I don't know if it
is still there.(1) I just took a look at the 195 Magazine from 1959
and saw this picture in it. Below also is an enlargement of my 5 yr.
"service" pin.
