1950 - Babette, Karolina (pic dated by my mother) (see description) Women did all kinds of things to make their and their family's clothes last longer. Here Aunt Babette is wearing a dress with a gored skirt. I'm pretty sure the dress was getting old or was damaged in some way and she or my mother "fixed it up". You didn't see gored skirts every day, but it wasn't exactly rare either.
When your father and I married I mended his socks when he poked a toe through or wore a heel out. It didn't take me long to appreciate store-bought replacements.
