Margaret feeding the chickens (see description) Some years later father decided to go in the business of breeding chickens. Mother wasn't happy about the extra work. She liked to tell the story of how it was her job to candle the eggs and keep the records. Frequently, she said, she'd fall asleep at 1:00 a.m. or later in the chicken house trying to get that job done. Then she'd wake up, trudge back over to the house, get in bed, and go to sleep in till about 4:00 in morning when her day started all over again.
