1957 - Behind the brick pile (see description) *****I was sniffling a little bit when this picture was taken. I kept begging father to take my picture just like the one Brigitte had, with her dress spread out. Father kept saying no. I alternately pleaded, whined, or cried. Finally mother had enough of me and ordered father to take a picture so she could have her peace.
*****On the right hand side you can just see a bit of a brick pile that father had in a corner of the garden. You had to go just a little further to back and the right, but there's where I took my baths in the summer. Mother would take out the big metal tub and carry water to it to fill it. It would be left to sit in the sun. When warm enough, I took my bath in it. Don't ask if we all took baths in the same water. I used to know, but I don't remember. That's just as well . . . In the winter the "bathtub" was set up in the kitchen. Mother would put in so much cold water and then fill it with boiling water until the temperature was just right. Saturday was bath day because the next day you went to church. We washed ourselves every day, of course, but Saturday we got wet all over! As Anna Pennell used to say, first you wash as far down as possible, then you wash up as far as possible, and last you wash the possible.
