Bear Corn is an achlorophyllous plant. That means it lives without producing chlorophyll, similar to the Indian Pipe with which we might be more familiar.

It's small. Bear Corn might be just over an inch tall. It's a parasite that lives off the roots of Oak trees. It can kill a young tree.

Packing up on Monday morning we found this slithering across the tarp we had laid out to dry. Eastern Milk Snake. Non-venomous, in case anyone is interested.

Eastern Milk Snake, a baby at 12" - 16" long. Adults can grow to be five feet long. They prefer forested areas where they like to hide among the leaves.
